Isabel Soloaga, ‘Mapping Sexual Orientation Asylum Claims – 2015-2018’, 2020

Abstract

This map was created by Isabel Soloaga with Google Maps using experimental statistical data provided by the UK Home Office. It records information on asylum applications where sexual orientation formed part of the basis of the applicant’s claim. The map shows the number of asylum applications submitted on the basis of sexual orientation between 2015 and 2018, by country. It also shows initial decisions in relation to each country of origin in 2018. Guidance on using the map is provided alongside the map.

Isabel Sologa is a Master’s student at the University of Sussex, studying Migration and Global Development. Her dissertation research examines how SOGI asylees settle in the UK and how governmental policies shape their decisions to move. Prior to coming to the University of Sussex, she worked in immigration law in the United States. She completed her BA at the University of California, Berkeley and is originally from just outside of San Francisco.
