Tschalär and McNally, ‘Mainstreaming Inclusion for LGBTIQ Refugees’, 2024

Mengia Tschalär and Adam McNally, ‘Mainstreaming Inclusion for LGBTIQ Refugees: An Overview of the Displacement Context in Central & Eastern Europe’, ORAM – Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration, October 2024

Abstract

Within the rapidly evolving context of forced displacement – now at a record 120 million globally, as highlighted by the UNHCR Global Trends Report – this study addresses the underrepresentation of LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers in refugee response. Drawing on qualitative data from key LGBTIQ and refugee-serving organizations across Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, this research consolidates insights and best practices shared by these organizations to provide actionable policy and programmatic recommendations. These focus on addressing material and special vulnerability needs, such as health care, accommodation, employment, and legal assistance. This report is intended as an invitation for stakeholders to work towards intersectional inclusion efforts that take the experiences of those at the outmost margin as a starting point for designing inclusive humanitarian interventions.
